NOzeanium, Basel Health & Wellness Coalition Event, Sustainable Living - Clean Spring Cleaning

Broadcast on:
30 April, 2019

Some months ago, Basel City government gave the go-ahead for the city’s Zoo to start planning its latest expansion project - a new, state-of-the-art Oceanarium. Our roving reporter Andrew Craven interviewed Vice Director of the Zoo Dr. Heidi Rodel back in February. However, not everyone agrees with the project. To hear the other side, Andrea Bollinger from NOzeanium came in to give us the arguments against the Oceanarium. The Ozeanium will stock its aquariums mainly with creatures from the wild, which endangers these marine creatures and their fragile ecosystems. The Ozeanium goes against sustainability, too; it would consume enormous amounts of energy. The educational impact is questionable, and it does not fit in with the Zoo's progressive principle of "more space for fewer animals". NOzeanium argues that the financial risks and operating costs are too high, and that we don't need the 151st big aquarium in Europe, with Sea Life Konstanz barely 2 hours away. Read up on all the arguments on NOzeanium's website. Listen to the interview again here.

The Basel Health & Wellness Coalition is putting on another showcase event for the public on Saturday May 11th from 13:45 to 18:00 at Centrepoint, entitled "Transforming Body and Mind". Six therapists will be giving a series of live demonstrations on how they work on the table or seated, using live models. The event will be in English. There is chance to ask the therapists questions during the break and stay afterwards to meet them in person. The entrance fee is CHF 10.-. Dianne Mecklenburg came in to give us the details. Listen to the interview again here.

Our "Queen of Green" Carrie Aikman continues her series on sustainable living - everything you always wanted to know about being planet-friendly. In this segment, Carrie talked about truly clean spring cleaning. Many household cleaners contain chemicals that can be irritating to our health, and polluting to both our indoor air as well as the planet, all in the name of convenience. You can make your own cleaners using everyday ingredients instead. A good website to keep on hand is Earth Easy. Listen to Carrie's segment again for all the details!
