NOzeanium - April 2019

Some months ago, Basel City government gave the go-ahead for the city’s Zoo to start planning its latest expansion project - a new, state-of-the-art Oceanarium. Our roving reporter Andrew Craven interviewed Vice Director of the Zoo Dr. Heidi Rodel back in February 2019.

However, not everyone agrees with the project. To hear the other side, Andrea Bollinger from NOzeanium came in to give us the arguments against the Oceanarium. The Ozeanium will stock its aquariums mainly with creatures from the wild, which endangers these marine creatures and their fragile ecosystems. The Ozeanium goes against sustainability, too; it would consume enormous amounts of energy. The educational impact is questionable, and it does not fit in with the Zoo's progressive principle of "more space for fewer animals". NOzeanium argues that the financial risks and operating costs are too high, and that we don't need the 151st big aquarium in Europe, with Sea Life Konstanz barely 2 hours away. Read up on all the arguments on NOzeanium's website.
