What To Do and See at Basel Fasnacht 2025
Basel Fasnacht is around the corner! The carnival runs from Monday March 10th through Wednesday the 12th. Fasnacht starts with the Morgestraich at 4 am on Monday morning. (Yes, 4 am!) Trains, trams and buses run all night, so you can get into town using public transport. As the church bells toll 4, the city's street lights turn off and the fifing and drumming starts. The only illumination comes from the lanterns. It's quite a moment, and if you see nothing else of Fasnacht, see Morgestraich.
On Monday and Wednesday, you can check out the Cortèges. These parades through the city feature all the Cliques, Gugge and Waggiswäge. They begin at half past 1 pm and run until about 6 pm. After that, it's all groups to themselves as they wind their random way around the small streets in the old part of town. Have a wander up Spalenberg, Gemsberg and along Nadelberg late at night and soak up the Fasnacht vibe.
Throughout Fasnacht, you’ll see signs for Cliquekäller (Clique cellars) along Bäumleingasse, Gerbergässlein, Nadelberg, and pretty much everywhere. These are often beautiful old cellars with vaulted ceilings, lanterns, and food and drink on offer. And if you're celebrating with kids, Fasnacht Tuesday is the children and family celebration, beginning in the early afternoon.
