Boutique Theatre Basel - Educating Rita; Democrats Abroad at the DNC Chicago

Broadcast on:
20 August, 2024

The Boutique Theatre Basel's upcoming production is Willy Russell's stage comedy «Educating Rita», a play for two actors. The play takes place entirely in the office of an Open University professor. Rita, a young Liverpudlian and working class hairdresser, has decided to take a class at Open University taught by Frank. Frank is a middle-aged educator who salves his weariness with alcohol. Frank is taken by Rita's energy and fresh perspective on classic works.

The tutoring sessions take place in Frank's office. It is during these tutoring sessions that we learn more about Rita and Frank and how their relationship develops. The play tackles themes of gender stereotypes, class, and addiction.

The performances are on September 13th, 14th, 20th, 22nd, 27th and 28th at 20:00 at the Fachwerk Allschwil. Get your tickets here. Actors Natalie Müller and Fred Zimmerman joined us to talk about the play. Listen to the interview here.

In the U.S., the Democratic Convention is in its second day, and one Basel resident has a front-row seat. Liz Voss, chair of the Basel chapter of Democrats Abroad, is one of twenty-one delegates in Chicago representing Americans who live outside of the country. Voss is also the first American living in Switzerland to go to the convention as a delegate. She spoke with The English Show about her experience this week, and about how to make sure you can vote as an American abroad, regardless of party affiliation. The website for details on voting as an American living outside of the U.S. is VoteFromAbroad.org. Upcoming events in Switzerland are here. Listen to the interview here.
