The Upper Strata, Sue Style, Basel Zoo Oceanarium, Gadget Guru - Foldable Smartphones

Broadcast on:
26 February, 2019

The Upper Strata are a chameleon-like duo blending indie rock, electro, disco, trip hop and blues, with Johnny on vocals, guitar and bass, and Reg on bass, synth/sequencers, accordion, and vocals. Live, they combine guitar, bass, synth, and accordion with loops, beats, found sounds and videos. Their most recent album is "Neon Glitz", which you can get on Bandcamp or at one of their shows. For a limited time, you can pick the vinyl up at Schmocki's Ohrwurm Oase on Güterstrasse 265. Or contact the band after that through www.sanchezartwerk.com. Listen to the interview and the song "Line" from their album "Neon Glitz" here.

Sue Style came in to talk about all the delicious things to eat in the pre-Lenten warm-up to Carnival - they're mostly deep-fried, dusted with sugar and stupendously fattening, to get you ready for 40 days of fasting. Favourites of Sue's include Fasnachtskiechli, those flaky fritters dusted in icing sugar which people used to make at home but nowadays are most likely buy in the supermarket. Try making a super-simple dessert by layering them with balls of ice cream in a springform pan for a kind of frozen carnival torte. And if you prefer things salty, don't forget Faschtewäije, diamond-shaped savoury breads sprinkled with caraway seeds, lovely with a bowl of soup or a cool beer.

Some months ago, Basel City government gave the go-ahead for the city’s Zoo to start planning its latest expansion project. Today, Basel Zoo officials unveiled one of the Zoo’s most ambitious plans ever - a new, state-of-the-art Oceanarium. We sent our roving reporter, Andrew Craven, to find out more from Dr. Heidi Rodel - Vice Director of the Zoo and Project Leader for the new Oceanarium. He started by asking her: if Basel is hundreds of miles from the ocean, why do we need an Oceanarium at all? Listen to the interview again here.

Going against his unwritten rules and his better judgement, this week Ian the Gadget Guru talks about the new 'foldable' smartphones from Samsung and Huawei. They may be innovative but are they the next big thing? Listen to the segment to find out more!

Our music theme was Northern Soul Underground Rarities. Northern soul is a music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England in the late 1960s from the British mod scene as a particular style of black American soul music, based on the heavy beat and fast tempo of the mid-1960s Motown sound. We played:

Betty Everett - I'll Be There

The Upper Strata - Line (today's guest!)

Barrett Strong - Seven Sins

The Valentinos - Lookin' For Love

The Profiles - Take A Giant Step (Walk On)

Sue Perrin - Put A Ring On My Finger

The Squires - Don't Accuse Me
