Basel Democrats Abroad, Sue Style, Médecins Sans Frontiers Series Part 2, Health Spots # 5 - Patient Info

Broadcast on:
15 December, 2015

America is already busy making headlines in advance of their general elections in 2016. The Basel chapter of  The Democrats Abroad organization will be hosting an event on Sunday the 20th of January to view the Democratic debates. The event is open to all people from across the political spectrum and will be an opportunity to view the debates in a social environment and to discuss and debate the merits of the Democratic candidates for president in the 2016 election. Even if you've lived in Switzerland for many years and have been uninvolved with American politics, your American citizenship entitles you and makes you responsible to participate. It's easier than ever to ensure your voter registration is in good standing and Democrats Abroad can help you with it or you can go to VoteFromAbroad.org for further information and assistance.

Champagne, Prosecco, Cremant, Prosecco, Sekt - whatever your poison, it's bubbly wine time for the holidays, and who better to join us for a chat on the subject than Sue Style. Over 300,000,000 bottles of champage alone are sold each year, making bubbly wine possibly the world's most popular alcoholic beverage. Sue filled us in on the differences between the varieties and how they're made in their regions of origin. Living here in Basel makes the home of Crémant and Sekt especially easy to get comfortable with. Both come from parts of France and Germany directly accross the border from us. One Crémant producer Sue can recommend is Jean-Claude Buecher. No matter how you say it - Cheers, Prost, Zum Wohl, Sante, Chin Chin, Saluti - it all means good health, good times and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

This week, we had the second in a mini-series of shows looking at the work of the doctors, nurses and other experts at Médecins Sans Frontiers, the medical humanitarian organisation based in Geneva. Dr. Michelle Wright talks to Dr. Gabriel Alcoba about meningitis and looks at the challenges in diagnosing and treating this infection worldwide. Listen to the segment again here.

The English Show is proud to participate in Radio X's 'Gesundheitsspots'. This is a series of short public service announcements designed to demystify Swiss health services in the listener's native language. This week's spots give an overview over patients' rights and "Sans Papiers", or those seeking asylum. To listen to them again, click here and here.
