Best Sights To See - Rhine and Rhine Swimming, Rob Stuart

Broadcast on:
4 August, 2015

We'd like to dedicate this week's English Show to Mike McNamara, who sadly passed away a few weeks ago. Mike was the singer of the band Mojo Train, who - way back in 2001 - recorded an English Show jingle - the jingle that you still hear today at the beginning of each show. In October 2013, Mike and Mojo Train came into the studio to play a couple of songs live, and we all had a blast. Thank you, Mike, and Mojo Train, for giving us so much joy!

This week, our Basel tour guide Madeleine Wamister told us about one of the Best Sights To See in Basel: the river Rhine, which flows right through Basel, dividing the city into Grossbasel and Kleinbasel. The Rhine is around 1'230 km long, making it the second-longest river in Central and Western Europe, after the Danube. It provides recreation and inspiration and has moulded the history and architecture of the city. There's even a famous local song named after the river: "Z'Basel an mym Rhy". And of course you can take a dip in the river - Rhine swimming is a popular pastime on these hot summer days. This year's official Rhine Swim is on the 18th August.

Our second guest was our cinema expert Rob Stuart, who came in to talk about the Locarno Film Festival from the 5 - 15 August, as well as the Openair Salt.Cinema (formerly Orange Cinema) on the Münsterplatz, starting on August 6th. The full programme for that is here. Rob told us about The Man From U.N.C.L.E. by Guy Ritchie, Woody Allen's Irrational Man with Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, Peter Bogdanovich's She's Funny That Way and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation with Tom Cruise.
