Basel Hockey Club Promoted; Happy Ending For Hound; City Helps Ukrainian Refugees

News For 15 March 2022

Basel's hometown hockey team EHC Basel, also known as the Sharks, have had to wait two years because of pandemic restrictions on sports events to try and earn a promotion back into Switzerland's professional league.  Prior to that, fans were left wondering about the future of hockey in Basel when the club went bankrupt in 2014.  Thanks to last week's 5-2 win over Martigny in the Mysports league playoffs, EHC Basel has been promoted again into the national Swiss League.  In addition to joyous celebrations by fans, the promotion means junior players in the club can get exposure and training to professional hockey in their hometown.

In January we reported that a Husky dog named Ice belonging to a family in Reinach was abducted and police were involved with recovery efforts. For the last two months the family frantically tried all efforts to find Ice, networking with neighbors and the police to glean information about the dog's whereabouts and his abductors.  In a happy twist, the dog has been found safe, and returned by police to its relieved owners.  Police have not disclosed how they found the dog citing an ongoing investigation.

Basel's Department of Economics, Social Affairs, and Environment announced last Friday that 150 housing units owned and operated by the city will be made available to Ukrainian refugees fleeing conflict in their home country.  In addition, 180 more units are being prepared in case of additional need.  Spokesperson for the Department also commended the Basel community at large - the Benevol project of Basel's GGG Foundation has already received more than 200 offers from private individuals and families to host refugees.  Last Friday, the Swiss Federal council announced that it had activated its collective protection status for refugees from Ukraine.  By doing so, asylum seekers can stay, work and go to school in Switzerland for up to one year without prior application procedures.
