Gadget Guru - Technology for Older People; 80s Hits
During this episode of the Gadget Guru, Ian takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the challenges of growing old and the technologies available to help with aging. Ian reminded us of what used to be called "Geezer Mail", the endless flow of advertisements that would crowd your physical mailbox or late-night television for products and services targeting an aging population. Seems Ian has noticed that advertisers have kept apace with technology and now "spam" your e-inbox as well with similarly targeted products.
One of those products is the "Fairphone" smartphone designed for those looking for an Android operating system based device that is not manufactured by Samsung, Microsoft or one of the other giants of the smartphone industry. The Fairphone sports a relatively low price, but provides ample technology "bang" for a limited budget. For many older people, Ian suggests an Apple iPad as a good solution to consolidate email, video conferencing, web surfing, and other virtual activities. Ian pointed out that it is helpful to live in proximity to an Apple store that regularly hosts training for those new to their devices.
And finally, the Hero Medication Dispenser has caught Ian's eye. The device is available by subscription in the US and will help users keep track of their daily meds. No more lost pills, having to remember if you've taken your pills, and, as an internet-enabled device, it can warn you of a missed or upcoming dose. Listen to the whole Gadget Guru segment here.
