Heatwave, Cultural Events, and Post-Punk

Broadcast on:
21 June, 2022

Temperature records for June in Basel were shattered as the mercury rose above 36C in thermometers the last few days. But all is not lost in our fair city, which comes equipped with a built-in cooling station. We are speaking of course of the Rhein, and the activity of Rheinschwimmen - Baslers know that when you can't take the heat any longer in a land without air-conditioners, you throw yourself in the river and cool off as the sun sets, bringing relief to your body and mind. It would appear that global extreme weather trends have arrived in Basel as well... MeteoSwiss reports that following this unexpected heatwave, we can look forward to rain squalls, extreme thunderstorms and hail for the next few days bringing temperatures back to normal and some much-needed rain.

No matter what the weather, you can look forward to plenty of events this week, from the Pärkli Jam and Summerstage Basel to the Dorffest Riehen and Bildrausch Filmfest Basel, as well as Beck and Pearl Jam over in Zurich.

As for summer music festivals coming up, check out the OpenAir St. Gallen from 30 June to 3 July and the Gurtenfestival in Bern from 13 to 16 July.

The musical theme for tonight's programme was Post-Punk. While "classic" punk may have died, its musical styles and swagger persist in the bands and songs we played tonight:

IDLES - Never Fight A Man With A Perm

TV Priest - Press Gang

NOV3L - Notice Of Foreclosure

Black Country, New Road - Chaos Space Marine

Sweeping Promises - Hunger For A Way Out

Parquet Courts - Total Football

Whispering Sons - Alone

Julie - Flutter
