Coronavirus Measures Updates; Karena Stoner's "Bâlehoo: An Expat's Guide to Surviving - and Thriving - in Basel"

Broadcast on:

In our first segment of tonight's show, we discussed the latest measures the Swiss Federal Council has introduced to combat Coronavirus. In response to a rapid rise in diagnosed cases over the last few weeks, there are significant upgrades and tightening of rules which proscribe limits on gatherings, and the generalized use of masks in public and private places. Gatherings in public spaces are limited to 15 people. At private gatherings (which include family and friends) of up to 100 people, masks must be worn and contact details for all attendees must be gathered. Hospitality venues are allowed to remain open; however, food and drink can only be consumed while seated. Mandatory mask wearing is imposed at all publicly accessible buildings and inside spaces: sport venues, cinemas, theaters, doctor's offices, places of worship, museums, public transportation facilities (stations, terminals, etc.). Guidelines are available in a multitude of languages at this link. Here's a PDF in English with the new rules. A PDF of FAQs is here.

Karena Stoner, author of "Bâlehoo: A Expat's Guide to Surviving - and Thriving - in Basel", joined us in the studio tonight. Inspired to write by her second tour as an expat in Basel, Karena was first here in the early 2000's and is now back since 2018. Finding the experience of integrating just as hard the second-time, Karena put her professional writing skills to creating a guide for expats. The book is available at Bider & Tanner, Amazon and more. Basel Life Magazine's upcoming review of the book says: "Beautiful and well-written, reading Bâlehoo feels like getting personal advice from a friend. So, whether you’re a long-time expat, just arrived, or considering becoming one, Bâlehoo is a must-have for every expat’s survival kit." One of Karena's "pro-tips" is the app "TooGoodToGo" available in the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). The app is a goldmine for those looking to get amazing discounts on Basel restaurant food while helping to fight food waste. Listen to the interview here.
