Dwain Wood - Head Coach of Basel Gladiators, Fitting Wines - Chasselas, Asparagus Review with Sue Style

Broadcast on:
17 May, 2016

Did you know that Basel hosts an American Football team? They have been thrilling fans since 1989... back then they were the Raurica Gladiators, but now they're the Basel Gladiators. Their head coach Dwain Wood joined us to talk about the team, its prospects in the Swiss and European leagues and the team's hopes and efforts to secure a permanent stadium schedule in the city. You can see the team this Sunday, May 22 at 14:00 (Juniors play at 11:00) in Pratteln at the Sandgrube (Giebenacherstrasse 10, 4133 Pratteln).

In this month's edition of The Wine Show, Simon Hardy of Fitting Wines turns his attention to wines made from Chasselas. This traditional Swiss white grape variety deserves a little more credit than it generally receives. From Fendant to Gutedel, the comprehensive overview provides information on tasting notes, geographic origins, food pairings and notable producers. We got to learn about the history of this under-appreciated grape and its special relationship with Switzerland, and its cuisine.

Sue Style was in the studio to once again mark the height of the asparagus season. Listen to the show to learn the how's and the why's of White vs Green, some tasting ideas, where to buy and most importantly where to EAT! Although we already missed the event, the Confrerie de l'Asperge hosts annual guided walks in the asparagus fields around Village Neuf just over the borders into France. Plan for 2017 to see first-hand how asparagus is cultivated, gathered and eaten, all in the company of the brotherhood and plenty of wine to keep you hydrated during the event.

Sue's suggestions for Asparagus eating in nearby notable restaurants:

Restaurant A L'Ange in Leymen (easily accessible via Tram 10...)

Auberge Belle Vue in Wentzwiller

Funfschilling in Fischingen

Landgasthof Engemuhle in Wintersweiler
