Rylla Resler, Death By Chocolate, Sue Style, Ekat Bork, William Fitzsimmons
Rylla Resler came to the studio this week to tell us about being an expat and dealing with a new life in an unfamiliar country. Rylla moved to Switzerland with her family a few years ago. She knows from personal experience how important it is to have help and support with this process, to share your experiences, and to know you are not alone. She started The Expat Experience courses to support expats to make the most of their lives.
Ellie caught up with Death By Chocolate, a Swiss five-piece who have been together since 2003. They compose modern, playful rock songs and have toured Switzerland extensively. They've also performed gigs around the rest of Europe, for example at the massive Exit Festival in Serbia, and further abroad at venues like the Whisky a Go Go and the Viper Room in Los Angeles. Listen to the interview again here.
Sue Style was with us this week for her regular foodie slot and covered the August 1st brunches that take place in farmsteads all around Switzerland - 350 will take part this year, including quite a few in Baselland. This is always a great event and a neat way to get up close and personal with a real Swiss farm. The family - for most Swiss farms are family affairs - puts on a terrific spread - expect Roesti, fried eggs, sausages, ham, home-made Zopf (braided bread, mmmm), alphorns, piano accordeons and much more, all for CHF 35.- To see which farms in your region are taking part, check out the Schweizer Bauern (Swiss Farmers) website. Sue will also put up something on her website with the skinny on one of the best brunches, in Beatenberg on Lake Thun.
Next, Anna talked to Russian singer Ekat Bork, who's been living in Switzerland since 2007. An impressive stage performer, Ekat told us about what she feels when she's singing, her debut album Veramellious, and her second album, due out next year. Listen to the interview again here.
And finally, Wlliam Fitzsimmons is an American singer-songwriter born in Illinois to two blind parents, both recreational musicians. He trained as a counsellor before self-recording a few songs, which then became his debut album. He plays guitar, banjo, piano, melodica, ukulele, and the mandolin, and accompanies those instruments with an almost boyish singing voice in heartfelt folk songs. Fitzsimmons told us about growing up in a musical household and juggling world tours with changing diapers at home. Listen to the interview again here.
This week's music was based around our interviewed musicians as well as other bands who played at this year's Gurtenfestival. We played Cypress Hill, Death By Chocolate, Ekat Bork, William Fitzsimmons, Milky Chance and The Kooks.
