Basel Irish Club, Rob Stuart
Vicky Dungan of Basel Irish Club came into the studio to talk about the upcoming St. Patrick's Day event. Bound to be a lot of fun, with traditional Irish food, lots of Guinness, and Irish music and dancing, this year the event will be held at Lindenberg 8, not far from the Wettsteinplatz, on March 15th from 5 p.m. Reserve a place in advance and come wearing green!
Our cinema expert Rob Stuart told us all about last weekend's Oscars.
Best Film was "12 Years a Slave", directed by Steve McQueen, the accomplished video artist, former student of Goldsmith's College London and winner of the 1999 Turner Prize. McQueen recently exhibited more than 20 videos, films and photographic works at the art house "Schaulager" in Münchenstein near Basel.
Best Actress was awarded to Cate Blanchett for the Woody Allen drama "Blue Jasmine".
Best Actor went to Matthew McConaughey in a film regarded by many critics as an outlier, "Dallas Buyers Club".
Best Supporting Actor went to McConaughey's co-star Jared Leto for a stunning performance in "Dallas Buyers Club".
And finally, Best Supporting Actress was awarded to Lupita Nyong'o for her moving performance in "12 Years a Slave".
In keeping with the upcoming St. Patrick's Day, all our music this week came from Irish bands. We played Flogging Mollly, My Bloody Valentine, Stiff Little Fingers, The Cranberries, The Dubliners, The Waterboys, Thin Lizzy, Two Door Cinema Club and Wonder Villains!
Swissgerman Phrase of the Week
Say you're in a shop and there's no price tag on the item you want to buy - what do you say? You could ask: "Wieviel koschtet das?" ("How much does this cost?"). And then, when you're at the till, the sales person might ask you: "Wänn Sie e Seggli?" ("Would you like a bag?") and you can answer with "Jä" or "Nai". Easy!
