A Ticket Back To Normality; BScene Won’t Be Seen; Police Praise Carnival Goers

News For 23 February 2021

Support is growing in Switzerland for the government to introduce an Israeli-Style Covid-19 immunity card, which would allow holders to go to bars, visit gyms, attend events and travel. This has the backing of several prominent Swiss politicians, including the president, who on Sunday said, "everyone who wants to travel, will need to be vaccinated in the future". State Councillor Andrea Caroni dismissed concerns that an immunity card would be a restriction on people's rights, saying "not introducing such a card would be unconstitutional to lock up vaccinated people by means of isolation or quarantine." Whilst many high-profile members of the government support this, others dismiss it. SP National Councillor Yvonne Feri disagreed, saying "Making things easier for those who have been vaccinated is like compulsory vaccination", adding "it’s not yet been proven that vaccinated people cannot still transmit the virus".

The Basel music festival BScene, which should have taken place on 23rd & 24th April, has been cancelled. The board of the BScene had to make the decision that the planning uncertainty for an event at the end of April is too great. Even if a decision should be made at the end of March that events can be carried out again, the effort involved in carrying them out would be too great. The necessary infrastructure for security and protection would have to be developed on a voluntary basis, and within a very short period of time that would be impossible. The already existing Corona concept, which has been developed in recent months, cannot be adapted so quickly. This is yet another blow to the already devastated entertainment industry. But with improvements being made on a daily basis, we step ever closer to enjoying festivals once again.

Hundreds of carnival enthusiasts took to the streets in the Basel area on Sunday to celebrate Fasnacht, despite it officially being cancelled this year. The police, who were present in the city, praised the good behaviour of people, saying they hardly found any violations of the corona rules, and that people peacefully celebrated, socially distanced in their allowed groups of five. Some restaurants were able to serve take away food and drinks, which again seemed to be responsibly consumed by spectators who enjoyed their beers and bratwurst, whilst enjoying some of the socially distanced performances. With the nice weather continuing this week, the police encourage people to continue the good behaviour, and more importantly to keep safe.
