Fasnacht Comite Explores Options; Fox Found In Fielman; Baby Bebbi Sagg Coming To A Store Near You

News For 11 January 2022

The organizing committee of the Basel Fasnacht carnival is continuing its efforts to ensure that Fasnacht will be able to take place in March in one form or another. Once the severity of the current coronavirus outbreak became evident, the committee had to cancel the Cortège, which is the parade on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. Now, discussions are taking place with public health officials about keeping some elements of the carnival going, like the 4 a.m. Morgestraich and the evening activities. At the moment, those in public office have said that it's too early to decide, and they hope to make a decision by late January, which should leave enough time to successfully plan eventual Fasnacht activities.

A young fox was caught foraging in the Fielman Optician shop in Marktplatz on Saturday. After a night out on the streets of Basel looking for a place to eat, he must have gotten tired. The red-tailed fox found a safe place for a nap just outside the store. When the doors opened in the morning, the befuddled bushy-tailed beast continued his search inside, bewildered by the astounded customers huddling on the stairs. The fire brigade caught him safely with a towel and set him free outside of town. Foxes aren't known to make their way into town. It is assumed that the fox was left behind or perhaps on an adventure of a different kind - perhaps he was looking for glasses?

According to government statistics, annual household waste that ends up getting incinerated has been steadily decreasing over the years. Apparently, this is a result of successful recycling initiatives which leave small households with smaller quantities of waste headed for the waste incinerator. Enter the new 10-liter Bebbi Sagg, the official waste disposal bags that Baselers pay for to dispose of household waste. The new size will be the smallest of the available sizes - currently the largest one for household use is 60 liters, and the "old" small size was 17 liters. Bags will be available, as customary, in rolls of 20 and available at the same distributors as previously at a cost of CHF 14 per roll.
