Another ATM Blowup; Police Expand Drone Surveillance; New Podcast For FCB

News For 7 May 2024

Unfortunately, another ATM seems to have been stolen by means of an explosion. A few years ago, a spate of similar robberies plagued the suburbs around Basel as thieves would use extraordinary means to dislodge the cash machines from the walls in which they were anchored. At 5 in the morning today, an ATM on Friedrich-Miescher-Strasse in the St. Jakobs neighborhood near the border with France suffered a similar fate as two explosions woke the neighborhood. The fire brigade was dispatched to ensure everyone's safety.  Fortunately, there were no injuries and authorities are still investigating.

Starting May 15, a two year pilot project of the Basel Police will see the expanded use of drones for surveillance and investigation. The police would like to see the drones put to use in disaster recovery, missions deemed dangerous for service personnel, and to observe demonstrations. While this may sound like something the police already do, it is in fact a departure into using drones during non-criminal investigations. In seeking to reassure data-sensitive residents of Basel, the police have said their drones will be clearly marked with police colors and insignia.
