John Grant at Kaufleuten Zurich - 21 November 2015
He has three solo albums under his belt and enough life experiences to supply the material for at least another three: John Grant, American singer-songwriter, currently a resident of Iceland. His concert at Kaufleuten in Zurich was - as is always the case with Grant - a treat from start to finish.
From the piano-led ballads of his first album Queen Of Denmark via the electro of Pale Green Ghosts to the funk of new album Grey Tickles, Black Pressure, his velvet baritone effortlessly adapted to the different moods and textures of the songs.
Mixing levity and wit with pathos is his speciality, and the connoisseur audience in Zurich clearly appreciated this, cheering and clapping when he launched into Queen Of Denmark, listening intently during the emotional Glacier.
Snug Slacks, You & Him and Disappointing formed a highly enjoyable triumvirate of funkiness, and GMF remained as funny as ever. The most sublime moment arrived at Pale Green Ghosts, a track of relentless rhythmicity and trance-inducing electronica, underscored by an excerpt from Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C-sharp minor. Spellbinding.
