Gurtenfestival 2014
2014 yielded another splendid edition of the always-entertaining Gurtenfestival in Bern. The English Show's fearless reporter Ellie Golder and intrepid photographer Anna Wirz braved three days of sunshine and one day of dramatic storms to bring you interviews and pictures galore.
Highlights included Cypress Hill inviting Everlast on stage and intoning the peerless Jump Around; William Fitzsimmons' delicate folk strains in the balmy early afternoon; Franz Ferdinand's rousing set with a bonkers audience; Massive Attack's hypnotising trip-hop in the gloaming; and Placebo nearly blown off the stage by gale-force winds and rain.
On the Swiss bands front, blues rockers Death By Chocolate and Rozbub blew us away. In fact, all the homegrown musicians we saw - from Rival Kings to Yokko, The Gardener & The Tree to Hathors, Pegasus to Kadebostany - were a cut above.
Discoveries included 1960s soul throwbacks Vintage Trouble, whose energy was through the roof, and the Netherland's Kensington and their melodious tunes.
