Sustainable Living - Eco Habit Challenge Month 3 - March 2018
Our "Queen of Green" Carrie Aikman continues her Eco Habit Challenge for 2018. This month, we're looking to Zero Waste and overhaul our recipes. The first step is to eliminate dishes that call for hard-to-find ingredients - things that can’t be replaced with a package-free option. The second step, which can be done simultaneously, is to take recipes you like but simply need a swap to make them zero-waste. For more steps and tips, listen to Carrie's segment below. And you'll find tips for reducing food waste on this Facebook page.
Carrie uses a folder on her computer as her recipe box. If you’d like to go this route, there is an app for your smartphone called CamScanner. This will make the process of converting your favorite written recipes into an electronic version quick and painless.
Recapping what we’ve covered so far: our first habit was to shop package-free, and the second challenge was to replace a store-bought item with one you make at home.
Manor on Greifengasse near Claraplatz will fill your reusable containers with lunch meat, fish, cheese and more.
For ravioli in your own containers, Zero Waste Basel’s Facebook group recommend World of Pasta on Freie Strasse and the Pasta Cafe on Rosshofgasse. The department store Globus will do it as well. And there’s a stand at the farmer's market on Marktplatz, and also at the market on Saturdays in St. Louis, France.
To reduce some recycling, Carrie found that LOKAL, a fantastic shop on Feldbergstrasse that sells only local items, sells yogurt in a returnable glass jar. You pay a deposit on it at the time of purchase and get it back when you return it. They also sell a variety of local juices, so you can bring in your own bottle for filling.
