Museum Kleines Klingental - Geborgen aus dem Untergrund Exhibit - June 2024
For the first time, archaeological findings from underneath Marktplatz and Freie Strasse are on public display. Through March 2025, visitors to the Museum Kleines Klingental can get a glimpse at artifacts from the Roman era through the Middle Ages. These pieces were found during excavations around the popular shopping area in the city center and show us pieces of life from centuries past.
There are leather-working tools, pottery, and even coins and a coin minting hammer, showing that even a thousand years ago, people were buying things on Freie Strasse.
The exhibit is called «Geborgen aus dem Untergrund – Archäologische Funde aus dem Zentrum Basels» («Recovered from underground – archaeological finds from the centre of Basel»). The English Show walked through the exhibit with Gian Bott of the Museum Kleines Klingental.
