Devin Townsend - December 2019

Canadian musician, songwriter and producer Devin Townsend started out as a lead vocalist for guitarist Steve Vai in the early 1990s before going on to form his own bands (such as Strapping Young Lad and the Devin Townsend Project), creating side projects, and releasing solo albums. Townsend mixes progressive metal with rock, ambient, new age and more. His vocals range from opera-esque singing to on-pitch metal screaming and are jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Across all his bands and projects, he has released twenty-three studio albums and three live albums.

Townsend released his most recent album “Empath” on March 29, 2019. Guests on the album include former Frank Zappa collaborators Mike Keneally, Morgan Ågren and Steve Vai as well as Anneke Van Giersbergen and Ché Aimee Dorval, who collaborated with Townsend on music project Casualties of Cool.

Some of these musicians are now on tour with Townsend, and they gave a stunning performance in Zurich on December 3, 2019. The music and the show was bonkers and funny and all over the place in the best possible sense. Before the concert, Devin Townsend sat down with Anna Wirz to talk about tutus, the absurdity of being human, and new album "Empath".
