A dance piece in immersive virtual reality
With VR_I, Swiss choreographer Gilles Jobin invites the audience into a unique sensory experience: equipped with virtual reality headsets, visitors can simultaneously navigate freely in real space and interact with virtual dancers from a virtual world. For the first time, a choreographer combines dance with immersive virtual reality.
Thanks to the virtual reality technology developed by the Geneva-based company Artanim, visitors move freely in virtual space with virtual reality headsets and computer backpacks. Five spectators can explore this world at the same time, moving alternately in an endless desert, in a cityscape or in a hut on the top of a mountain.
Each participant embodies an avatar who reproduces his movements true to the original while at the same time being able to see the other participants. During the performance, participants can interact physically and even communicate with each other.
Then five virtual dancers appear, multiplying, growing into giants or becoming tiny. With these size effects Gilles Jobin deals in an original way with the idea of spatiality.
The international line-up for this work designed and produced in Switzerland consists of the American composer Carla Scaletti, the Belgian fashion designer Jean-Paul Lespagnard and the dancers Victoria Chiu, Susana Panadés Diaz, Diya Naidu, Tidiani N' Diaye and Gilles Jobin himself.

Although he mainly lives and works in Geneva, Gilles Jobin regularly works across borders. After 10 years of professional dancing, he founded his company Cie Gilles Jobin, one of the leading independent dance companies in Switzerland, and his radical artistic work has made him a pioneer of a new generation of European choreographers.
