Korea's Ambassador to Switzerland LEE Sangkyu, Dig It! - Trees

Broadcast on:
5 April, 2016

Last week we interviewed James Jeon, the choreographer with the Seoul Ballet Company in Korea. He described a joint project with Basel’s own Ballet company. He and Basel’s choreographer, Richard Wherlock, have collaborated in a unique, joint production, entitled MOVES, featuring dancers from both countries at Basel’s very own Theater in sellout performances last weekend. A couple of days before then, choreographers and dancers held one final rehearsal in the presence of the Korea’s Ambassador to Switzerland, LEE Sangkyu. Backstage, Andrew Craven asked him how important events such as these are in bringing cultures together. Listen to the interview again here.

Hester Macdonald, contributing correspondent of the BlueBox team, garden designer and founder of the Swiss Gardening School, hosts our regular gardening segment, Dig It! This week's show is all about trees, and how extraordinary they are. Hester heard a lecture by the "grand old man" of French tropical trees, Francis Hallé, last week and was blown away by the breadth of his knowledge and lots of great and peculiar facts about trees. Did you know that in Japan they are used as early warning systems for earthquakes? And that "forest bathing" or Shinrin-Yoku, has been proven to relieve anxiety, anger and stress, as well as improving our bodies capacity to fight diseases? Luckily, you don't have to go all the way to Japan to enjoy the benefits, you can just get outside and breathe close to a pine tree! Listen to the segment again here.
