Founded in 1917 as a means to boost confidence during World War I, the MUBA expo will open its doors for the last time this year.  The fair has suffered from declining attendance for many years and organizers have decided 2019 will be the final expo.  Interestingly, Baselworld, and SwissBau are both expos that have been spun off from MUBA and continue to thrive to this day.  The 103rd Expo will open its doors February 8th and run until the 17th of the month.

On February 2nd, thousands of Swiss students will hold demonstrations across the country in an effort to raise awareness about climate change inaction and to change related Swiss laws. Last year, an estimated 10,000 students in Basel, Bern, Zurich, Baden, Aarau, Lausanne, Solothurn, Luzern, and Zug took part in the strikes.

Basel Stadt and Basel Land are joining together to further harmonize the integration of their medical, firefighting, sanitation and civil defense services.  As part of this effort, the two cantons will develop unified guidelines for these services, and establish and ratify agreements with consolidated service vendors.  These agreements are set to continue cooperation for the next four years, at which time they will automatically renew.
