Sustainable Living - Eco Habit Challenge Month 4 - May 2018
Our "Queen of Green" Carrie Aikman continues her Eco Habit Challenge for 2018. This month, we're talking household products - specifically, using refillable bottles for laundry detergent, liquid soap and dishwashing soap. Carrie told us where to go, what you need, and why switching to the environmentally-friendly options might soon be on your "to-do" list.

Research has linked ingredients commonly used in detergents to many health and environmental hazards. Over 16,000 research studies on Sodium Lauryl Sulfate have shown links to irritation of the skin and eyes, organ toxicity, developmental/reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, endocrine disruption, ecotoxicology, and biochemical or cellular changes, and even cancer.
Another common ingredient is dioxane, which is actually a byproduct, meaning it doesn’t even have to be listed on product labels! And yet dioxane is classified as a possible carcinogen, and can be toxic to your brain and central nervous system, kidneys, liver and respiratory system. When you use a laundry detergent contaminated with dioxane, it goes everywhere. It never breaks down. Water filters can’t remove it - and it isn’t biodegradable.
