Don Giovanni Opera at Theater Basel

The figure of Don Giovanni is the embodiment of hedonism: seducer, Lebemann, egoist. For him there are no limits, neither social nor legal. His whole existence is directed solely to personal enjoyment. Don Giovanni promises nothing but the sensuality of the moment, but his seduction is not a single success: Don Giovanni remains an unresolved promise. The hopes, which he disappoints, the people, who remain on the line - and by murder - care him little. Only Leporello, the archivist of his conquests, is faithful to Don Giovanni, is a servant, a friend, and an escort. After the murder of Father Donna Annas and a failed attempt to seduce, Don Giovanni has to flee from her and her fiance. The followers are joined by Donna Elvira, who is dishonored by the heartbreaker. The hunt leads them to a peasant wedding, and Don Giovanni tries to seduce the bride, but he does not succeed. But he takes flight. In the cemetery Don Giovanni is finally asked for a statue for dinner, at the end of which he is devoured by the earth. The normality is restored, the good has (seemingly) triumphed.

Mozart's music comedy raises the question of the extent to which we should abolish the limitations of our social existence: what values ​​do we want to maintain, which ones should be thrown overboard? What does personal freedom mean?

It is directed by the British director Richard Jones, who won the Laurence Olivier Award for his work, whose work on the big opera houses worldwide inspire enthusiasm. The musical direction is played by the music director Erik Nielsen.
