Artificial Voyager: The Voyager Golden Records analysed by an artificial intelligence.

Event / Performance

In 1977 NASA launched the Voyager spacecraft to explore and gather information about the solar system and interstellar space. The Voyager carried a record with phonographic recordings including musical selection from different cultures and languages as well as natural sounds. The so-called Voyager Golden Records were intended to present the diversity of life and culture on earth to a hypothetical extra-terrestrial intelligent life form.

The artist’s group Disnovation.org has submitted the content of the Voyager Golden Records to an artificial intelligence program structured as a neural network. At HeK they present a performance in which they offer an alien perception of the content of Voyager Golden Records. Virgin of all deep understanding, the algorithm re-aggregates all the sound snippets according to rules of purely formal & statistical correlations (timbre, spectrum, and dynamics).

Disinovation.org is a working group based in Paris, initiated by Nicolas Maigret and Maria Roszkowska, which aims to disrupt, pervert, and complexity the discourses on technological innovation. The group develops situations of disturbance, speculation, and debate, challenging the ideology of innovation and stimulating the emergence of alternative narratives. They recently edited the pirate book, an anthology on media piracy. Their research includes artworks, curation, & editions.

This project is presented in the context of the artists Nicolas Maigret and Maria Roszkowska residency at HeK, in collaboration with EMARE, European Media Artists in Residence Exchange 2016.
